State of the State

Legislation to Help Combat Texting Fraud

Last week, the Senate Commerce Committee voted in favor of S3578, legislation requiring anyone not a licensee with the NJ Real Estate Commission to send a preliminary text message before soliciting a homeowner. The text to the homeowner must include that they are not a licensee with the REC, the name of the company they work for, and include that the text is a solicitation.

If passed in the State Senate, there will be penalty fees for any violators and the Division of Consumer Affairs will develop a public relations campaign to combat text messaging fraud as it relates to home sales.

New Jersey Realtors® worked closely with the bill sponsors to amend the legislation language and protect those with their real estate licenses.
